4 It will be noted that music has not been referred to. This is because music is not a cognitive art, in the sense that it does not describe or represent physical objects in the external world. It does express inner emotional response to these objects, but that is a different matter. Also, while it can reproduce acoustic experience of the physical world, the ‘sound’ on which this experience is based is not actually an external physical object, but an inner, subjective sensation felt in response to the impact of air-vibrations. Air-vibrations themselves can be described as external physical objects, but this description cannot apply to the sensations they produce.
